The „white day“ and the „black day“
What is the „white and black day“? In this article, I’m going to tell you about the 14.03.2022 and 14.04.2022.
First, we start with the „white day“. It is on the 14th March and originates from China.
It is the counterpart to the „Valentine’s day“. In some Asian countries like Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, only women give away presents on „Valentine’s day“. This is how they express their affection and love. So on the „white day“, it’s men’s turn to give their presents.
But what is the story behind the „white day“? The day was created in 1977 by a pastry chef. In 1978, the day was first celebrated as „Marshmallow Day“. The idea was picked up by confectionery manufactures and became quickly known.
But now, I will report about the „black day“. The „black day“ is on the 14th April and originates from South Korea. The day is specially created on April 14th because March 14th is the „white day“ and February 14th „Valentine’s day“. But because these are only days for couples, there is a „black day“ for singles. On the „black day“, singles in South Korea dress in black and regret or celebrate to be single. Also, black food is very popular on the „black day“. Parties are also often celebrated on this day.
There are two ideas where the „black day“ came from. The first idea is that the initiative was created by the South Korean government. The other idea is that the day was created by marketing and advertising professionals.
I think it is a very cool and new idea. And possibly, it will also be a respected holiday in Germany.
